Traeger Grill Troubleshooting: Quick & Easy Fixes (updated)

Are you getting ready for your first backyard barbecue of the season? If so, you’ll want to double-check that your grill is ready to perform! If you need help with your Traeger grill, read on for some common gas grill problems.

The grill won’t power on.

If your Traeger grill fails to start, the following possible causes are a tripped GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter) on the outlet, a bad power outlet, or a faulty extension cord. Another probable cause is a blown fuse on the back of the controller or a break in the power cord.

Payless Tip: Remember to wear gloves when touching wires and ensure the power is off before inspecting.

The grill won’t light.

If your grill powers on but doesn’t light, then this can be due to the induction fan not running or the hotrod failing to heat up.

Payless Tip: Your Traeger Grill will not light if there no wood pellets in the firepot.

The grill is tripping the GFCI.

When your grill repeatedly trips the outlet’s GFCI, a component of the grill is bad, causing it to fall to the ground. Most often, this problem is the result of a faulty hotrod. Other possible causes include the controller, auger motor, and induction fan.

The grill fan isn’t turning.

When the induction fan isn’t running, this can be due to a lack of power from the controller to the orange wires. This issue is also caused if the grease on the fan’s shaft has seized up due to a lack of use. In this case, spinning the fan a few times may solve the issue. Lastly, wires and similar obstructions can prevent the fan from turning.

The grill auger won’t move.

If the auger is jammed, this is caused by moisture in the pellets. When the pellets are moist, it becomes crumbly and can clog the auger, which causes failure to ignite. In addition, another problem can be a broken gear in the auger motor or a broken shear pin, which attaches the auger to its motor.

Payless Tip: The auger won’t move if it isn’t getting power from the controller to the red wires.
