When you buy smoke alarms, be sure to get at least one that uses photoelectric technology, and at least one that uses ionization technology. Photoelectric smoke alarms are effective at detecting moldering fires, like those started by a cigarette, while ionization smoke alarms are better at detecting flaming fires, like grease fires on the stove. Place a smoke alarm in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
